Pensioners rescued from 'care home from hell' in the Philippines
Pensioners were rescued from a hellish care home in the Philippines where they were allegedly abused for three years.
The elderly citizens were reportedly starved and living in squalid conditions before social workers raided the nursing home in rural Maramag town, Bukidnon province, on October 11.
Officers stormed the 600-square-metre facility, operated by Bukidnon Multi-Sectoral Services Foundation Incorporated, and found several pensioners padlocked in dirty rooms that resembled animal pens.
Upon entering, the team were hit by the foul stench of human waste. They also found the concrete floors of the sleeping quarters were caked in mud, and the retirees were given only shoddy wooden beds to sleep on.
Irene Dosol-Auxillo, information officer of the Social Welfare Department's Protective Services Division, said: 'The smell was so unbearable that we had to cover our noses. The smell of human feces and urine was everywhere.'
Seventeen senior citizens were rescued and handed over to state-run care facilities in Manolo Fortich town.
In a statement, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Northern Mindanao said: 'Aside from the lack of registration, the residents were found in squalid and dangerous conditions. A rescue operation was immediately carried out to ensure the safety of the clients.
'Among the violations found were unsanitary bathrooms, lack of occupational safety standards, and conditions that may pose health threats. There is also no proper case management system such as proper documentation of residents, and lack of qualified and professional caregivers.'
John Andre Lalaan, chief of a village neighbouring the care home, said: 'The residents complained about how the senior citizens yell that they are hungry. They also complained about the stench from the facility reaching their houses.
'The owners would promise to fix these problems, but each time, they broke that promise.'
The DSWD said earlier monitoring visits found that the retirement home had been operating without a valid license and registration certificate. It was ordered to cease client intake but continued accepting residents, whose families reportedly paid a 6,000 to 7,000 PHP (76 to 89 GBP) monthly fee.
Officials served a closure order, citing violations of Republic Act No. 10847, which requires social welfare and development agencies to be duly registered.
