China: Chinese livestock firms find success in pet food industry
Storyline: Chinese livestock firms find success in pet food industry [Voice_over] In eastern China's Shandong Province, livestock companies are diversifying their products with some going into pet food production. As one of the largest white-feathered chicken processing hubs in the province, the city of Linyi processed more than one billion white-feathered chickens last year. The manager of one chicken processing plant says while parts like wings and legs go to grocery stores, chicken carcasses are increasingly being used as a core material for pet food. [Sound_bite] Liang Junqiang, manager, broiler production base: "The raw materials for pet food are becoming increasingly diverse. For example, (chicken) breast fillets, tenderloins, and whole chickens are core raw materials for high-end pet food. For regular pet food, chicken carcasses are often chosen as the core raw material. For just the chicken carcasses category alone, our annual supply volume can reach over 1,600 tons." [Voice_over] At another pet food enterprise in the region, employees say they use chicken as main ingredient in more than 95 percent of their products. [Sound_bite] Gao Yiwen, head, soft packaging workshop, pet food producer: "Our current annual production capacity for pet food is 690,000 tons, an increase of about 30 percent compared to the previous year." [Voice_over] According to market consultancy group iiMedia Research, China's pet industry is expected to be valued at around 162 billion U.S. dollars by the year 2028.
