At least eight people were killed when a landslide hit a mine in Indonesia.

Dramatic footage shows the hillside crashing down in a cloud of dust and debris at the stone quarry on Mount Kuda in West Java today.

Sheets of earth slid down the rock face, burying dozens of workers and several heavy machines at the site.

Authorities said at least eight people were killed and 12 others injured.

Police chief commissioner Sumarni said: 'Eight dead victims have been found. Twelve people were taken to Sumberhurip Hospital.

'We don't know the exact number yet, but evacuation efforts are still ongoing.'

Authorities said the mine had an official permit valid until November 2025. The owner is in police custody for questioning.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has reportedly ordered operations to cease following the landslide.

He said in a video statement: ‘Some time ago, before I became governor, I visited the mining site.

‘I found that the mining operations were very dangerous and did not meet proper safety standards for the workers.

‘But because it has been licensed, I did not have the authority to stop it, and the mining went on.

‘Now I have received tragic news that more than 10 people may be buried in the landslide.'

Officials said rescue efforts were ongoing.
