Gaza's humanitarian crisis persists under Israeli aid restrictions
Storyline: One month after the ceasefire took effect, Israel continues to restrict the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, depriving the Palestinians of life-saving supplies and exposing them to worsening conditions. Since the ceasefire agreement came into effect on Oct 10, Israeli authorities have rejected 107 requests for the entry of relief materials, including essentials like blankets and winter clothing, as well as equipment for water supply and sanitation, said the United Nations. Although the initial phase of the ceasefire deal has since brought relative calm to the enclave, the Israeli troops have continued to open fire near the so-called "yellow line," a demarcation marking areas where the Israeli forces remain deployed in Gaza under the ceasefire agreement. Compounding the danger of being killed by Israeli gunfire is the fact that many Palestinians remain displaced and live in dilapidated tent shelters, without access to daily essentials like food, water and fuel. "I have barely received any aid since February this year. I live in the Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City where access to fresh water is extremely difficult. Even partially filtered salty water for showering has only been available for just two days. Before that, we had been cut off from water supply for more than one month and we have been enduring the hardships like these every day," said Ibrahim Al-Jamri, a local in Gaza City. U.S. mediator Jared Kushner and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks on Monday on the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire. The two discussed some of the most sensitive aspects of the agreement's phase two, Israeli government spokeswoman Shosh Bedrosian told the media. But Gazans said they see no point in promoting the second phase of ceasefire agreement, since the first phase has not been fully implemented. "We remain displaced. We don't even have a tent to live in and our basic needs have not been guaranteed. Israel is not fully implementing the first-phase ceasefire agreement, not to mention the second phase. One of the terms of the agreement is the entry of 600 trucks on a daily basis, which has not been implemented so far," said Ibrahim Al-Khatib, another resident in Gaza City. "This is not a normal life. We are still ensuring hardships. People are starving, dying and being destroyed. You tell me the war is over. [People say] the ceasefire agreement has been in effect for one month. That's not true. In fact, the war is not over," said Hassan Al-Qatnani, another local.
