This is the shocking moment a train derailed, leaving dozens of passengers injured in Argentina.

The Sarmiento line train number 3358 was travelling near Liniers Railway Station when the second-to-last carriage detached while passing through a track switch in Buenos Aires.

CCTV footage shows seven carriages passing safely before sparks appeared at the eighth.

The detached carriage slid onto the opposite track, and the area was soon covered in smoke.

Sarmiento line's operator, Trenes Argentinos, said in a statement: ‘Train 3358, travelling from Moreno to Once, experienced a decoupling at Liniers station. The incident occurred at a track switch. The train braked in time according to the operational safety protocol.

‘The causes of the event are under investigation and can only be determined once the track is cleared and the corresponding inspections are completed.'

Shocked residents were seen crossing the tracks, watching the plume of smoke covering the carriages.

At least 19 commuters were injured and taken to nearby hospitals, including two minors.

Those who were unhurt were escorted from the train and walked along the tracks until they reached Rivadavia Avenue.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
