Indonesian beach overwhelmed with litter washing up on shore
Padang, West Sumatra – The recent hydrometeorological disaster that affected several areas in Padang City has left a significant mark on the coastal environment. One of the hardest-hit locations is Muaro Lasak Beach in Rimbo Kaluang Village, West Padang, where large piles of trash have once again inundated the shoreline after heavy rainfall that began last weekend.
The trash, consisting of various materials such as plastic, Styrofoam, wood, and even dead fish, has covered approximately 200 meters of the beach. Some of the debris can even be seen floating in the waters along the beach. The situation has not only turned the area into an eyesore but has also created a foul odor, disturbing the many tourists who frequent the beach, known for its iconic Dove of Peace Monument.
Responding quickly to the environmental crisis, the Padang City Environmental Agency (DLH), in collaboration with the Tourism Agency and the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), took immediate action. An excavator was deployed to clear the piles of trash, which had already reached a height of around one meter. The collected waste was then loaded into container trucks for disposal at the Air Dingin Landfill (TPA) in Koto Tangah, Padang.
This swift response aims to restore the beauty and cleanliness of Muaro Lasak Beach, which has been a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Authorities are working to prevent further environmental damage and ensure that the area remains a pleasant place to visit.
As Padang continues to face challenges from extreme weather events, the authorities emphasize the importance of both immediate action and long-term solutions to address environmental concerns.
