A barista rescued a litter of newborn kittens that had been abandoned in a wasteland.

Yemin Reoligio spotted the tiny moggies huddled beneath grass near the roadside where he had set up his coffee stall in Ilocos Sur, the Philippines.

Footage shows him searching for the source of the cries before putting on plastic gloves and climbing down the pavement to retrieve the felines.

He first found a small ginger, followed by four more scattered under thick vegetation.

Yemin said: 'While I was arranging my stall, I heard baby cats crying. I finished setting up first, then went to look for them and decided to take them.'

He combed through the weeds to locate the rest of the litter, which was so young that it was almost hidden under the dense plants.

The barista placed the kittens in a cardboard box and carried them safely back to his stall. At the end of the day, he closed his shop and took the animals home to care for them.

He added: 'I felt sorry for them. I am not a pet lover, but I could not ignore their cries while I was just sitting at my stall. I hope they survive.'
