China: Chinese navel orange farmers slice through challenges with sorting, logistics technology
Storyline: Chinese navel orange farmers slice through challenges with sorting, logistics technology [Voice_over] In east China's Jiangxi Province, a major production region for navel oranges, local farmers are using advanced sorting technology and logistics to juice sales. In Xunwu County, where 80 percent of local farmers rely on orange cultivation, the upgraded sorting and logistics mean renewed pricing power for the farmers. That's because with things like smart sorting and grading, farmers can offer guaranteed high-quality oranges at higher prices. The head of storage at a newly built citrus industrial park in the region says the smart sorting and logistics upgrades have been a game changer. [Sound_bite] Zhong Shilin, storage head, industrial park: "As opposed to being sold in bulk, sorted and graded fruit can command up to 30-40 percent higher market prices." [Voice_over] Meanwhile, an upgraded logistics system is helping navel oranges reach targeted markets faster. To better serve rural communities, express delivery stations have been set up in 173 villages across 15 townships in the county. [Sound_bite] Zhang Xiaochun, head, supply and marketing distribution center: "We have now launched 47 direct delivery routes. Using a big data platform, we can accurately allocate vehicle capacity to resolve logistics congestion issues. Additionally, the widespread supply and marketing network points across villages form a centralized distribution system connecting the county and townships." [Voice_over] By the end of the year, Xunwu County is expected to produce 230,000 tons of oranges valued at more than 140 million U.S. dollars. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
