US: Sleeping Driver Stopped By Trooper Using Tactical Maneuver On Oklahoma Highway
United States - December 13, 2025 Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers responded earlier this month to a dangerous and highly unusual incident on the Will Rogers Turnpike after reports of a driver slumped over behind the wheel. On Saturday, December 13, around noon, multiple callers alerted the Northeast Communications Center about a newer-model Kia traveling slowly in the right lane. Witnesses said the driver appeared unconscious. Lieutenant Brian McSlarrow located the vehicle moving at about 40 miles per hour. Although it stayed within its lane, it drifted from lane line to lane line. The driver was clearly slumped over, and it was unclear whether fatigue or a medical emergency was involved. Lt. McSlarrow activated his emergency lights and siren and repeatedly attempted to get the driver’s attention by pulling alongside the car and sounding the siren close to the driver’s window. The driver did not respond and continued driving. With the risk of a serious crash increasing, the trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention to safely bring the car to a stop and wake the driver. Troopers later learned the man had worked nearly 20 hours within a 24-hour period. After eating, he began driving home with the vehicle’s lane assist activated. The car maintained a steady speed of about 40 miles per hour while the driver slept. The driver’s wife was contacted to transport him home, and he was issued a citation for inattention. Authorities warned that drowsy driving is extremely dangerous and frequently leads to serious and fatal crashes.
