A caravan in 'Britain's van-dweller capital' has been burned down in an arson attack - amid growing tension with locals.

The vehicle was 'deliberately' set ablaze in Fishponds, Bristol - where dozens of people live in at least 30 vans.

Charred remains are all that is left of a caravan that was destroyed by a fire on Monday evening on Goodneston Road.

Avon and Somerset Police said no injuries were reported and have launched an investigation into the cause of the flames.

The force was called to the fire at around 5.40pm and said the caravan was unoccupied at the time, and a second was damaged.

A cordon remains in place enclosing the destroyed vehicle, Bristol24/7 reports.

Neighbourhoods' inspector Richard Jones said: "We are aware of recent incidents on this stretch of road, and we are now working with partner agencies to improve the area."

"While we are not linking this incident to others recently, reassurance patrols will be carried out, and we are now appealing for witnesses and anybody with information to come forward."

A spokesperson for the fire service told Bristol24/7 crews from Kingswood and Temple used two breathing apparatus, two high-pressure hose reels and two triple extension ladders to extinguish the fire.

The incident comes as the issue of vehicle dwellers has become increasingly controversial, with the number of people living in vehicles in the city believed to be around 600, up from 70 in 2017.

In response, the Green-led council has promised to open 250 temporary places for vehicle dwellers, called "meanwhile sites", by the springtime."
