VARIOUS OF DEMONSTRATORS MARCHING, CHANTING SLOGANS, HOLDING SIGNS AND BANNERS CHICAGO, US - JAN. 7: An emergency vigil was held under the Little Village Arch in Chicago on Wednesday, January 7, after a federal immigration officer fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, 37, in Minnesota earlier in the day.

Demonstrators gathered at the neighborhood landmark to honor Good and to voice concern over recent federal immigration enforcement activity known locally as “Operation Midway Blitz.” Participants stood with candles and signs as community leaders addressed the crowd.

A US woman shot Wednesday by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in a fatal enforcement operation was identified as Renee Nicole Good.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Good, 37, attempted to hit officers with her vehicle, prompting an agent to fire in what officials described as an act of "self-defense."

Local officials disputed that account, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey saying he reviewed video footage of the shooting and rejected claims that it was justified, calling it a reckless use of force. He demanded federal immigration agents leave the city.

Releasing a joint statement on the incident, the Minneapolis City Council said Good was a resident whose “life was taken today at the hands of the federal government.”

“Anyone who kills someone in our city deserves to be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said the council, demanding ICE “immediately leave our city so we can get rid of their chaos and violence that ended the life of one of our neighbors today.”

Footage on social media showed an ICE agent standing in front of Good’s SUV as it moved forward, with the agent firing multiple shots.

The Trump administration has deployed nearly 2,000 federal agents to Minnesota in an ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigration following allegations of fraudulent practices at some childcare centers after an unverified video circulated on social media.
