Young male baboons suddenly start an extremely noisy fight
We had the pleasure to spend some time with a troop of baboons while on safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Majority of the time the antics of these primates make for very entertaining and amusing viewing. It was late afternoon and this troop were enjoying their last hour of sunlight before heading up into their trees for the night. Suddenly four young male baboons decided it was time to sort out their differences with an incredible noisy play fight. The youngsters were screaming at the top of their voices while engaging in a fight that seemed to be playful but mischievous at the same time. There is biting, wrestling and the pulling of hair, ears and tails. The slightly older males also clearly bullied the younger ones, showing off their dominance in size and aggressiveness. For a young male baboon, rising up the ranks within his natal group is extremely difficult. From an early age the youngsters will act aggressively towards each other on occasions in the race for seniority. The most aggressive males will always reign at the top of the strict baboon status hierarchy. Playful and aggressive fights like these are a crucial part in the maintaining of the social system of baboons.
