The African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the world’s largest terrestrial mammal – female Elephants grow up to 3.5 tonnes. African Elephants live in small family groups led by an older cow and comprising related cows, their young and sometimes adolescent males. Next to humans, Elephants are the greatest modifiers of the landscape, pushing over trees for food and digging wallows to make mud baths. This female herd arrived at a small pool that was formerly an Elephant wallow and began sucking up the muddy water in their trunks, drinking or spraying it over their bodies to cool off.
