A juvenile Eurasian Coot following an adult and being fed on algae
The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) is a common waterbird in Australia and occurs from Eurasia to Indonesia and New Guinea. Coots have lobed rather than webbed feet and thrive in wetlands with submerged or floating waterweeds. They obtain food by diving, and also graze on plants at the water surface and ashore. They also take some animal prey including insets, small fish and worms. This juvenile Coot was capable of feeding itself but followed its parent along the edge of Herdsman Lake, being fed as well as diving for food itself. Both birds are eating green filamentous algae.
