The night sky lights up red and orange as lava erupts from Soputan volcano in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The eruption comes just days after the 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Palu, killing more than 1,424 in one of the country's deadliest ever natural disasters.

This video, filmed by Gerry Roring from Langowan rice fields at 7.06 pm on Wednesday, October 3, shows the crater sending a column of ash into the sky and the glow of the lava.

According to Gerry, the volcano caused fires. "Not only lava and smoke, but fire is also seen covering the mountain," he said.

After an overnight eruption, Soputan re-erupted on Thursday, October 4 at 6:36 am with a column height of 1,500 ash.

In the footage filmed from a short distance before show the molten liquid slid 2,500 metres from the crater.

After an overnight eruption, Soputan re-erupted on Thursday, October 4 at 6:36 am with a column height of 1,500 ash. Volcanic ash does not make the flight disturbed.

The Center of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced that the eruption status had been elevated to Level 3.

Volcanic activity has increased in recent weeks leading up to the eruption, media reported, and locals have been advised to stay away from the vicinity to avoid contact with ash and potential lava flows.

It is not known if the earthquake and volcanic eruption were related.
