654 Indian flapshell turtles of rare species have been recovered from a small pond in Bharthana of Etawah district of UP on Wednesday .
Unfortunately, out of the turtles which were rescued from the possession of smugglers , 482 have been found dead, while 172 are sick.
All turtles are of rare species. Turtles of this species are preserved under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972..
The forest department raided and recovered the turtle on the basis of information of the informer. However, smugglers managed to escape from the scene.

According to the forest department, the turtle of this species is known locally as Sundari. According to the forest department, these turtles were brought from different areas and kept here

Due to fear of arrest the gang members dropped the turtles inside the pond f and fled , The forest department team raided with the help of local police. these reptiles are used with the belief that they increase sexual power. Earlier this month, about 50 Indian Star Tortoises who were trafficked to Singapore from Karnataka were returned to India by Singaporean authorities. They are known to be the most smuggled species of tortoises in the world owing to the star-like radiating pattern on their shell.
