A massive fire engulfed parts of a vegetable market and destroyed at least 200 houses in northern India.

The incident took place in Meerut region on March 6.

Visuals from the scene showed locals pouring water over the blaze in an attempt to douse it. Unfortunately, it proved far too little for the enormous inferno, which wreaked havoc.

The close stacking of slum houses aided the fire to spread. At least 15 fire tenders worked for over seven hours to bring the blaze down.

The number of casualties is not yet known.

Though the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, primary reports hinted at a short circuit.

Reports said the incident has left hundreds of migrants workers homeless.
