Farmers in north Indian have buried themselves chest-deep in the ground to continue their protest against the Jaipur Development Authority forcefully acquiring their lands.

The incident took place at Nindar village, Jaipur, Rajasthan, on January 6, with footage showing protesting farmers burying their bodies neck-deep into a trench, covered with mud.

The farmers then sat inside the trenches and remained buried for the next 44 days.

They were supported by a large number of women who also joined the resistance.

According to the reports, the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) had acquired the agricultural land from the farmers forcefully for development projects without paying any compensation.

Protests of this type first began on October 2, 2018.

“We will not let our lands be acquired under the old law. The scheme was launched in 2010, but the notification was taken out in May 2013. The new acquisition law was implemented from January 1, 2014, and till then our lands had not been taken nor had compensation been given – so why should we accept the old law,” said one of the protesting farmers.

“Most of the affected farmers have not surrendered the land. However, the JDA claims that the land has been surrendered with the consent of the affected owners. We were jailed for 11 days by the previous government, but we didn’t surrender our lands," Sitaram Sharma, another protester told the media.
