Young Elephants playing in water on a hot day – having a lovely time!

Buy video

Elephants in water are fascinating to watch. This small herd of African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta africana) were bathing in the muddy Luvuvhu River near Pafuri in the far northern section of Kruger National Park, in South Africa on a hot, 40-degree Celsius (104-degree Fahrenheit) day. The young elephants submerged themselves, rolled, bubbled and sprayed water with their trunks and gently played with each other, often intertwining their trunks and gently clashing tusks. There were initially five Elephants in the river that were joined by three more after a while. The water play went on for about six minutes until we had to move our vehicle as the largest Elephant emerged from the water right next to us, making it clear that he did not want us there!
