Amid 21-day-long nationwide lockdown to contain COVID-19 pandemic, police personnel bashes up violators on street in northern India

Police authorities have bashed up people violating the prohibitory guidelines introduced by the Indian government amid the 21-day-long lockdown set in place to contain the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

This incident took place at Sri Ganganagar, in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan on March 25, 2020.

The visuals show police personnel bashing up people on the road despite the warning issued by authorities for everyone to refrain from coming out on the street.

The police can be seen intercepting bikes and cars and questioning the people about their movements and motives.

If their answers were unsatisfactory, the police began bashing them up.

One person can be seen returning from a local alcohol shop.

After a questioning him, a police official resorted to lathi-charge for him to understand the graveness of the situation.

According to the Indian government, the violation of the lockdown is a crime punishable under section 51 of the Disaster Management Act for a term which may extend to one year or with fine or both.
