Red Sands and Shivering Sands isolated wartime forts off the Kent coast, UK
A ship is seen passing between the Red Sands (left) and Shivering Sands forts (right) several miles off the Kent coast on a clear day (April 1). The isolated wartime forts were built in the middle of the Thames Estuary.
The purpose of the forts was to defend London from attack by preventing German air raids from following the Thames as a landmark, and also to deter attempts to lay mines by aircraft in this important shipping channel.
