Buddhist monks had to tackle a fire which broke out at their temple yesterday morning (May 6).

The inferno spread through the second floor of the religious building in Uthai Thani, central Thailand, during the national holiday Visakha Bucha Day.

Monks noticed the smoke but kept their cool and used a hose connected to a nearby hydrant to douse the flames.

Footage shows the monks tackling the blaze along with local firefighters who arrived to help. Six fire trucks arrived and the fire was extinguished after one hour.

Monks said the temple had been recently renovated so they were disappointed to see the damaged but vowed to repair it quickly.

Police who investigated the blaze believe it was caused by an electrical fault.

Police Major Colonel Phanthep Tuengsap said: "We believed a short circuit caused the fire. We check the room again where the fire started.''
