One year ago Monday (June 15), Marco Leung, also known as the "yellow raincoat man" fell from a scaffolding at Pacific Place, Hong Kong and symbolically became a martyr for the pro-democracy movement.

One year ago, Marco Leung, also known as the "yellow raincoat man" fell from a scaffolding at Pacific Place, in Admiralty while hanging a pro-democracy banner. He has since become the first "martyr" for the pro-democracy movement, where his yellow silhouette often decorates protest propaganda. This evening, unlike previous months, a big crowd gathered at Admiralty, covering at one point over 2 kms, according to eyewitnesses, to pay respects to Leung. Protesters struck a defiant tone this time, where sorrow was replaced by pro-independence chants and songs of "Glory to Hong Kong". Many protesters either were clad in black, or wore white ribbons in sign of mourning. A yellow raincoat was held with the words "Fight against tyranny, we are not alone!", as a message of encouragement to all those who feel the movement is dying under relentless pressure from China.

Police was present in numbers, but allowed the peaceful protest to go on undisturbed until 23.30, at which point they arrived to disperse remaining mourners.
