Two stray dogs had to be rescued after falling into 100ft deep abandoned well.

Residents living nearby called the emergency services after hearing the pooches howling throughout the night in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

They strays were believed to have slipped into the muddy pit while roaming the area looking for food.

Rescuers arrived with abseiling gear to help the frightened dogs out of the hole.

They rappelled into the pit and tied ropes around the bodies of the mutts before pulling them to safety.

Rescue volunteer Ton Worarat said: "This is one of the most difficult animal rescues we have done this year. Everyone was glad that we saved them."

The rescue mission took more than two hours as they had to plan how to descend into the abyss with an oxygen tank then carry the dogs out of the dark and wet hole.

The scared and weary mutts scampered away after they were brought to the surface. The rescuers, with the help of the concerned locals, prepared some food for the dogs in case they come out of hiding.
