The carcass of a humpback whale was removed from a beach in the Cape Town area of South Africa

Local officials cleared the giant corpse form Strandfontein beachfront with diggers.

The 14m (45ft) long female whale washed ashore yesterday during strong southerly winds.

Simon Elwyn from Sea Search research and Conservation says he suspects it was a natural death brought on by the strains of the breeding season and migration.

The carcass will be buried at the Vissershoek landfill site along the West Coast of Cape Town.
