STORYLINE:
The end of the year is coming and with it, the fireworks season. Although there are some regions that have banned it, this is not the case in most large cities, where its use and commercialization is allowed despite the fact that it has been proven very bad for animals, children with autism and veterans of war.
Recommendations and tips so that pets do not suffer from fireworks:
-Do not leave them outdoors or on balconies without protection
-Do not have them tied
-Distract them with food and games
-Don't handle fireworks near pets
These are explanations of the recommendations and tips to try to minimize the discomforts and risks that our pets may run during the New Year holidays.
"Caring for dogs during noises is not only an act of love, but it is also a task that we must have as responsible owners," said Melina Wajner, veterinarian in charge of the Puppis health team, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. And added: "At the time of the celebration, the best thing is that he is reunited with the family and they can offer their support and containment, using pleasant music or simply looking for places with sound isolation".
The specialist explained that, during the time the fireworks are heard, it is important not to leave them in the open air or on balconies without protection, since they may flee out of fear.
Neither should pets be tied up, since that can generate greater anxiety and stress.
Another helpful tip is to distract them with food and games so that they are unaware of what is happening outside and can focus on something that really brings them pleasure.
"Dogs can feel very afraid and even run away from their homes when pyrotechnics are manipulated due to the noise they produce when they explode," said Puppis' veterinarian.
"This causes that not only the dogs get lost and run risks, but the birds, for example, can die of cardiac arrest due to the loud noises that our fun of colored lights in the sky generates for the animals", Wajner indicates and added: "Many animals tend to bite the pyrotechnics, which can cause irreparable damage to the pet."
On the other hand, it is recommended not to handle fireworks in a place where there are pets and children, since a failure can cause injuries, since they are the most vulnerable in the family.
