STORYLINE:
According to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Meat and Derivatives of the Argentine Republic (Ciccra), the consumption of beef fell in the first quarter of 2021, falling below 50 kilos per capita.

It is expected that this year consumption levels will continue to sink even more than in 2020, but making a review of consumption levels in history, of the 82 kilos on average that each Argentine consumed in the 1960s, it was decreasing as the years went by, according to data from the Argentine Beef Promotion Institute (IPCVA).

In the decrease in the consumption of beef, changes in the consumption habit of Argentines have been influencing such as vegetarian and vegan diets and those who consume other meats to avoid red meats, such as chicken and pork, which -at their time- are more accessible.

Brazil, which is the world's largest meat exporter, has undergone a drastic shift towards plant-based diets. The number of people who declare themselves vegetarian in Brazil has almost doubled in a period of six years, according to a survey carried out by the research company Ibope; 30 million people, or 14 percent of Brazilians, declared being vegetarian or vegan in 2020.

However, in Mexico, data from the Mexican Meat Council indicate that in 2019 Mexico was positioned among the 10 countries that accounted for 82% of meat consumption and is the fifth among the countries that consume meat per capita. According to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) in 2020, Mexico registered the production of 7,429,234 tons of beef, pork, lamb, goat, chicken and turkey.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), livestock contributes significantly to total human emissions of greenhouse gases. These emissions represent more than 14.5% globally, and have increased exponentially in recent years.

For their part, forests lost more than 12 million hectares of tree cover in 2020, according to the latest global data. Of that total, 4.2 million hectares, an area the size of the Netherlands, are found within humid tropical primary forests, which are especially important for carbon storage and biodiversity.

Although the situation varies from one country to another, deforestation linked to basic products such as beef (among others such as wood and palm oil) was the main cause of loss of tree cover in Latin America and Southeast Asia , while shifting cultivation predominates in tropical parts of Africa, researchers at the University of Maryland said in a report prepared in April this year.
