Shocking moment police officers DRAG Black woman, 68, out from her car by her HAIR – as she suffers torn rotator cuff - Part 1
A 68-year-old black woman has filed a lawsuit against police officers who grabbed her hair and dragged her out of her car during a traffic stop – reportedly leaving her with a torn rotator cuff.
Stephanie Bottom, 68, from Atlanta, Georgia, was driving to her great aunt’s funeral when police pulled her over in May 2019.
Bottom was allegedly driving 80mph in a 70mph zone but claims she didn't see officers trailing behind her.
Shocking footage has now been shared of the incident.
In the video, armed police officers can be seen approaching Bottom’s vehicle with their guns drawn.
One officer flings open her car window and drags her onto the grass, while another officer grabs her hair as the pair try to detain her.
Bottom screams in pain as officers pin her to the ground and pull her arms behind her back to handcuff her.
The 68-year-old can be heard repeatedly asking: “Why are you doing this to me?” to which the officer replies, “You were running about 10 miles”.
She replied,:“I haven’t run it I was just driving.”
The officer then tells her, “You’re going to jail now.”
Bottom replies, “Why, what have I done wrong? What have I done wrong? I’m 68 years old, please why are you doing this to me?."
Bottom allegedly tore her rotator cuff during the incident.
Bottom, who was 66 years old at the time of the incident, claims she posed no threat to the officers from the Salisbury Police Department and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
The lawsuit states officers approached her vehicle with guns drawn and later violated her rights by using excessive force.
'Within five seconds of arriving at her drivers’ side door with guns drawn, Defendants Benfield and Barkalow grabbed Plaintiff by her arm and hair and threw her from her Toyota Sequoia to the ground," the lawsuit reads.
The officers reportedly twisted Bottom's arm behind her back, causing her “shoulder to ‘pop’, tearing her rotator cuff and causing severe injury".
Officers also allegedly searched her car, which Bottom did not consent to.
Additionally, Bottom claims she told police officers that her shoulder was hurting and begged for medical attention, asking if she could call her family.
“That’s good police work, baby,” an officer involved in the stop can be heard saying in the video.
Bottom pleaded guilty to failing to heed blue lights.
She was also charged with speeding and resisting arrest, but both charges were dismissed.
Before the arrest, Bottom claimed she was listening to loud music in her car and did not realise she was being pulled over.
She has said all of the arresting officers were white.
Since the incident, Bottom has had surgery to repair the tear in her arm but the injury allegedly prevents her from raising her left arm above her head, according to the suit.
She claims to have been unable to work for eight months following the injuries and still primarily uses her right arm.
In her lawsuit, Bottom alleges two separate violations of the 4th and 14th Amendments, as well as assault and battery.
Bottom has requested punitive damages, compensatory damages, attorneys’ fees and other costs.
She also wants to prevent similar incidents for others in the future.
