South African police minister, Bheki Cele, attended the first court appearance of notorious Cape Town nightclub security boss, Nafiz Modack, at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. Modock was arrested on Thursday 29 April in a dramatic Hollywood style arrest near the Canal Walk shopping centre.

Cele made a dramatic entrance into court, surround by police in riot and tactical gear. After Modack’s appearance in the dock, Cele spoke to the media at entrance to the court. Cele praised the police for their efforts in arresting and detaining Modack.

According to Eric Ntabazalila, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape, Modack appeared alongside Jacques Cronje and Ricardo Morgan. The three have been charged with intimidation, kidnapping, extortion, money laundering and contravention of the Electronic Communications Act.

The case was remanded until 7 May 2021 and the three men are then due to formally apply for bail.
