South African police minister visits transport points with police and army
South African police minister, Bheki Cele, visited the Khayelitsha and Bellville taxi ranks with the police and army. His visit comes after authorities closed major taxi routes due to ongoing violence and conflict in the industry.
Cape Town commuters have been left stranded recently as taxi operators stopped their services across Cape Town due to the violence and murders which have been caused by the ongoing conflict between the two main taxi associations, CATA and CODETA.
Cele said the deployment of the army and police to secure taxi routes is not a permanent solution.
