An Osprey’s fish lunch is interrupted by a circling Kite

Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus cristatus), a type of fishing eagle, are common around the Peel-Harvey Estuary south of Perth in Western Australia. This adult male Osprey had caught a large Grey Mullet (Mugil cephalus) in the estuary and was eating it on its habitual perch in a Marri tree. It had eaten the mullet’s head and was beginning to remove its guts when a Whistling Kite began to circle, hoping for some fish. The Osprey called peevishly at the Kite, then took off when it came too close. The Osprey circled the tree, and then landed, removing the mullet’s guts and eating its flesh.
