Mt. Shasta California Wildfire Continues to Burn as Wildfire Season Intensifies in the West

Motorists on I-5 in Northern California see shocking sight of the Mt. Shasta strato-volcano without its usual snowcap. As they round the corner from Shasta City, they get a good look at the Lava Fire, which was ignited by lightning on June 24. Officials with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest report the fire is burning in areas that are inaccessible to ground crews, but the fire is being monitored. The west is experiencing a megadrought and heat wave that are taxing California's water supply and creating conditions ideal for an early and active wildfire season.
