A large elephant was escorted through Kandy, Sri Lanka, by government officials ahead of the festival of the tooth.

Nadungamuwa Raja, the 67-year-old tusker, is seen slowly walking through the city's streets surrounded by security.

The festival is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

Visuals feature the magnificent creature approaching the road while several government officials encircle the mammal and begin to march along with it. They continue to walk on the road while the onlookers catch a glimpse of the spectacle. Meanwhile, several vehicles accompany them until they reach their destination safely.

The 67-year-old Nadungamuwa Raja is a native of Mysore and takes part in Kandy Esala Perahera, also known as The Festival of the Tooth, every year. This historical procession is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. Moreover, the tusker goes there on foot as it doesn't travel through vehicles while it gets suitable treatment and government security.
