Smugglers conceal gold worth USD 60K in wig, seized by airport security in northern India

Two passengers were nabbed by security officials at an airport in northern India's Uttar Pradesh for attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 45.11 lakhs (USD 60,409.65).

The incident took place at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi on February 19.

Visual showed the customs officials removing the wig from a man and taking out the gold wrapped in a black cover and concealed on the bald patch of his head.

According to reports the gold weighed 884.700 grams (1.95 lbs).

The passengers were returning from the United Arab Emirates.

Officials said that the pouch concealed under the wig contained 646 grams (1.42 lbs) of gold, which is worth Rs 32.97 lakh (USD 44,146.89). Another passenger aboard the same flight was found to have 238.2 grams (0.52 lbs) of gold, worth Rs 12.14 lakh (USD 16,255.48). The gold was hidden between layers of plastic used to wrap the carton the passenger was carrying.
