Customs officials seize gold worth $1,07,221 from airport in southern India
Air Customs officials seized 1.72 kg (3.7 lbs) gold worth Rs. 79.78 lakh (USD 1,07,221) from southern India's Chennai International Airport on April 7. The suspects were intercepted at the airport.
A video features several bundles of gold wrapped with black adhesive tape. Following this, the officials slit open the bundles and retrieve gold from within them. Meanwhile, they also recover gold from socks while more bundles of gold paste are obtained from within the shoes.
In the following cases, the passengers had collected the gold hidden in their flights, which had flown in from international destinations. The officials recovered and seized 22 gold cut bits weighing 1.28 kg (2.8 lbs) worth Rs. 59.18 lakh (USD 79,162), from a passenger named Mohammed Anas, who arrived from Thiruvananthapuram.
Moreover, he had hidden the gold in a sock, kept in his pant pocket. On further interrogation, he revealed to have collected the gold from under the seat of the aircraft. Furthermore, the passenger was arrested.
A passenger, identified as Ravuathar Naina Mohammed, who arrived from Lucknow in Indigo Airlines was intercepted. Following this, 446 grams (0.9 lbs) of gold worth Rs. 20.6 lakh (USD 27,532) was seized. Furthermore, it was discovered that the same aircraft had traveled from Dubai to Lucknow and had taken the gold which was concealed under the seat.
