A pair of five-year-old Thai twins were married in a Buddhist ceremony to 'cleanse bad luck from their past lives' where they are believed to have been lovers.

Footage shows Nong Mut and his sister Nong Mai beside each other while relatives and villagers joined them at the wedding ceremony in Ang Thong province, Thailand on March 27.

The little groom was seen playing on his phone appearing bored while his bride apparently did her best to follow instructions from elders despite looking irritated.

Their superstitious parents Chittakan Jitwangron, 35, and Naowarat Marongsri, 36, arranged the wedding due to a belief that the twins were a couple in their past lives and would be haunted by bad luck unless they were married.

Proud mother Chittakan said: 'My twins were born together. I follow the belief that they were romantically connected in their past lives, and that's why they were born again as twins.

'We were afraid that unless they were married that there would be bad karma from their past lives causing problems for this in this one.'

Father Naowarat added: 'Having a marriage for the twins hasn't done any harm. It can only bring good luck. Everybody enjoyed it and the neighbours are pleased we did it for the children. People in the village all have this belief about twins.'

Nine monks were invited to pray the Buddha’s mantra at the wedding followed by a water-pouring ceremony among friends and family. Despite the grand wedding, the ceremony held no legal value and was only done for religious purposes.

Buddhists believe that twins were romantic soulmates in their past life but were prevented from being together, either through an unexpected death or being separated. They are then re-incarnated as male and female twins so they can be together from the first day of their new lives.

However, to overcome the fate of karma, or 'unfinished business', that had bonded them, superstitious locals believe that twins should be married - which fulfils their destiny and allows them to then start living as independent people and finding new love. If they don't, their lives will be plagued with ill health and bad luck.
