Rescuers helped locals through waist-deep floods as Tropical Storm Megi battered the Philippines.

Video taken on April 11 morning shows the local fire department assisting residents crossing the inundated streets of Baybay City in Leyte province. Passing drivers slowed down to prevent their vehicles from stalling in the deluge.

Tropical Storm Megi, locally known as Agaton, made landfall in Guiuan municipality, Eastern Samar at 7:30 am on Sunday with maximum sustained winds of up to 75 kilometres per hour.

State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said Megi has weakened but still poses a threat, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometres per hour. It is set to make a second landfall as it tracks west-northwest towards Eastern Leyte.

As of Sunday afternoon, some 1,419 passengers returning to their provinces for the country's Holy Week were stranded in ports due to the inclement weather, the Philippine Coast Guard said.
