Kind neighbours rescued an old woman from chest-deep floods as Typhoon Conson battered a coastal province in the Philippines on Monday.

April Rose Bendoy recorded the woman riding piggyback as people waded through chest-deep flood in the landlocked town of Tantangan in Southern Cotabato province.

The flood also swamped houses, forcing residents to evacuate. The water has receded Tuesday morning, leaving the town muddied.

Locals say this is the first time a flood has risen to this level in the area.

Severe tropical storm Conson intensified into a typhoon on Monday, September 6, and made landfall in Eastern Samar at 10 in the evening, according to state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Typhoon Conson, locally called Jolina, is expected to dump more rain in the Philippines over the next 24 hours as it moves northwest through the central province of Masbate.
