Sri Lankan elephant uses train's headlight to wander across a track at night

An elephant in Sri Lanka appeared to use a train's headlights to navigate across a railway track at night on Tuesday 24 May.

While it was a risky move, the local jumbos' tendency to get close to the track in the locality is so well known that two wildlife officers board trains passing through the jungle area, so they can guide them slowly through it.

So when the elephant wandered straight in front of the train on the Polonnaruwa Habarana railway, neither elephant nor the train and its passengers were hurt. And the elephant was perhaps able to use the headlight to cross the track more easily.
