Student, 18, rescued after falling down cliff while taking selfies
A student was rescued after falling down a 165ft cliff while taking selfies.
Mark Genesis Balagtas, 18, was visiting his aunty when he stopped to admire the breathtaking scenery in Nueva Vizcaya, the Philippines, on May 29.
The teenager parked his motorcycle and stood on the steep viewpoint near the Balete Pass National Shrine to take selfies.
However, he reportedly became dizzy from the height while standing over the steep slopes over the cliffside.
Locals heard Mark screaming for help after he plunged down the ravine. A security guard then raised the alarm.
Police and rescue teams arrived at the viewpoint in Barangay Tactac, Santa Fe, where they negotiated their way down the hillside and pulled the youngster to safety.
Lieutenant Jefferson Dalayap of Santa Fe Nueva Vizcaya Police Station said: 'The teenager was just standing there to take selfies. According to the victim, he felt dizzy when he fell off the cliff.
'The man told the authorities that he ran away from home to visit her aunt in San Mateo, Isabela. He got off the bus to take a selfie in Nueva Vizcaya and fell off the cliff.'
The Santa Fe Philippine National Police led by Dalayap and the police of the 3rd Maneuver Platoon 2nd Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Mobile Force Company, with Patrolman Gerald Etcobanez and Patrolman Vergel Lumauig, then went to the area where they discovered the injured teenager.
Nurse Allan Lazaro, who conducted the first aid, said the youngster suffered minor injuries and was taken to his hometown in Nueva Ecija where he was advised to rest.
Balete Pass National Shrine is one of the most visited historic sites in Nueva Vizcaya. The Balete Pass, also called Dalton Pass, is a mountain pass that connects the Nueva Vizcaya and Nueva Ecija provinces and often attracts local and foreign tourists.
