Yesterday (June 17) angry protesters set trains and vehicles on fire, caused damage and blocked roads in the state of Bihar, Eastern India, to oppose the Agnipath scheme, a new army recruitment plan recently presented by the government.

A person died and 13 others were injured during the violent clashes.

The new reform introduces the hiring of temporary soldiers that demonstrators believe would constitute a barrier. The plan would make it harder to obtain coveted permanent military jobs.

Visuals show the smoke coming out of train coaches, protesters running and the Indian police chasing them with sticks.

Footage also features firefighters at the scene of the incident.

A person wearing a helmet uses a loudspeaker to ask protesters to leave the station and says that authorities will consider their demands.

Protests also broke out in other regions such as the ones of Bhagalpur, Arwal, Buxar, Gaya, Munger, Nawada, Saharsa, Siwan, and Aurangabad.

A train was set on fire by people protesting against an army recruitment scheme in northern India's Bihar.

The incident happened at Lakhisarai Junction of the eponymous district on June 17.

Visuals show the smoke coming out of the torched train coaches, whose fire was being doused with the help of firefighters, policemen, and other people. A person wearing a helmet was seen requesting the protesters over the loudspeaker to stop their activities. He said that the authorities will take their protest points into consideration so that it reaches the higher-ups.

He requested the protesters to leave the place and stop any kind of destruction.

Broken glasses and other burning things were also seen on the railway tracks.

According to a report, this protest was against the new army recruitment scheme titled, 'Agnipath' which was for short-term induction of personnel into the forces.

Not just this but protests also broke out in different regions of the state namely, the Bhagalpur, Arwal, Buxar, Gaya, Munger, Nawada, Saharsa, Siwan, and Aurangabad districts. Some of these protests included stone-pelting and also vandalising vehicles.
