Richard Ratcliffe joins family vigil for jailed pro-democracy British-Egyptian activist Alaa El-Fattah
Supporters and Mona Seif, the sister of Alaa Abd El-Fattah, a British Egyptian pro-democracy campaigner, gathered for a vigil (June 22) outside the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) following Foreign Secretary Liz Truss' announcement that she will do all she can to secure his release.
The 40-year-old who was a key figure in the 2011 uprising in Egypt was jailed initially for five years on the charge of 'spreading fake news' by sharing a Facebook post, though authorities have added another five years onto his sentence.
He has now been hunger-striking for 82 days and is limiting his intake to 100 calories a day to enable the campaigning for his release to continue.
Richard Ratcliffe, husband of recently freed Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and MP Alistair Carmichael also joined the gathering in support.
