Drone deployed to create artificial rain to combat drought in southern China
A huge rain-seeding drone was deployed to help end the drought in southern China.
Video filmed in Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province on August 25 shows the large Yilong-2H UAV carrying 20 stripes of silver iodide setting off at 3,500-metre-high Aba Hongyuan Airport and flying to 7,500 metres high into the sky.
According to reports, the drone flew for 3 hours and 50 minutes and lit the 20 silver iodide stripes when it flew to the highest point.
The province suffered high temperatures and less rainfall since July this year causing droughts and mountain fires in some areas.
The local meteorological department will continue to carry out artificial rain operations until August 29 to end the drought.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
