A wild elephant chased a passing tourist's car when they refused to stop - instead trying to take pictures of the animal.

The female jumbo named Duan was wandering along the road when a silver estate approached the road in Nakhon Nayok province, Thailand, on November 5.

Wildlife rangers that had been tracking the cow urged the driver to stop but they continued driving - causing the spooked elephant to charge at their vehicle.

Footage shows the elephant rushing near the car before a passenger opens the door to take photos.

Khao Yai National Park chief Chaiya Huai Hongthong said: ‘We searched for the tourist with the help of our officers who followed where the car went. Everyone must follow the National Park Act when entering our forest roads for the safety of everyone.'

The driver was identified by officers on November 6 and fined 5,000 baht (133 USD / 117 GBP).

Park head Chaiya added: ‘With the rules in place, we are only trying to preserve the lives of our tourists, animals, and our park rangers too.'

According to the Thai National Park Act, a set of guidelines must be followed when encountering wild elephants such as not using car horns or making loud noises that will disturb the animals and stopping at least 100ft away from the creatures.

However, instead of backing off, the tourist in the video was seen pushing through the path and even taking photos of the animal.

The park head added: 'These things could affect the behaviour of the wild animal and put drivers, passengers and others in great danger.'
