A hungry wild elephant attacked a rubbish shelter in a car park in Thailand.

Footage shows the jumbo named Diao Nap pushing the structure's roof causing it to lift from the ground in Nakhon Nayok province on March 11.

Shocked visitors watched the bull's rampage before a wildlife ranger in a pickup truck arrived to usher the elephant away.

The animal slowly backed off as the vehicle driven by ranger Pho Suthi blocked his path. It then trudged back into woodland in the Khao Yai National Park, a sprawling forest that is home to a third of all the species in the country.

Onlooker Benjawan Nakniyom said: 'The elephant was about to destroy the rubbish stall, but the officer stopped him. The elephant then stepped back and looked annoyed.'

Elephants are known for their voracious appetite. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) found need to eat up to 150kg of food per day - the equivalent of 375 tins of baked beans

Conservationists in Thailand say that wild elephants - up to 3,500 of them - have even developed a taste for human food and prefer to rummage through homes and vehicles for snacks, instead of the bland leaves they find in the forest.
