Lonely mamma monkey adopts tiny puppy in India
Locals in Vellore in India's Tamil Nadu state were surprised to see a wild monkey treating a puppy as its own child.
When residents witnessed the creature carrying the pup up into the trees they gathered around and tried to tempt the cross-species mom down, some with bananas, others with biscuits.
The simian was spotted walking the tightrope of electrical wires and jumping between tall trees.
Some residents thought the monkey had taken the puppy from a stray dog's litter nearby and that the monkey was from a group that had wandered into the area in search of food.
They also thought that the monkey had lost its own baby recently, hence why it chose to adopt the puppy, though it is not clear how they knew this.
The monkey mum carries the puppy with her at all times and when anyone tries to get close, she clings tight to the pup and runs away.
She even breast feeds the little dog, showing a care that surprised the locals as much as her unusual adoption choice.
