A wild monitor lizard startled a passing cyclist when it emerged from bushes at the side of the path.

Action camera footage shows the reptile crawling into the pathway causing Auttapol to hit the brakes and topple over in Bangkok, Thailand, on November 19.

The creature jumped back to the side of the walkway with the confused cyclist worrying if he had hurt the lizard.

However, it sprinted across the concrete again and plunged into the canal.

Auttapol said: ‘I was taking a shortcut around the neighbourhood. I wasn't riding too fast. I thought I had killed it. I was really worried. But then it jumped back out again I almost had a heart attack.'
