Thousands of people lined the streets of the Cape Town CBD to watch the 2023 Cape Town Street Parade. The event was held for the first time since 2020 as all public events were cancelled due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

The Cape Town Street Parade is also known as the Klopse Karnival (Coon Carnival) and is celebrated on 2 January known colloquially as Tweed Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year). Second New Year was celebrated by Malay slaves during colonial times because they were given the day off after serving their masters on New Year’s Day.

Minstrel Troupes practice throughout the year and parade throughout the CBD in colourful outfits, with painted faces and play various musical instruments.
