Female Tawny Frogmouth staring with her huge yellow eyes and gaping – showing her yellow mouth

Buy video

A trio of nocturnal Tawny Frogmouths (Podargus strigoides brachypterus) has nested in Flooded Gum trees at Herdsman Lake west of Perth for several years. Tawny Frogmouths are not related to Owls and are closer to Nightjars and depend on their camouflaged plumage for protection. This female Frogmouth was perching in a Flooded Gum tree not far away from the male who was sitting on its nest with two newly-hatched chicks. During the day Tawny Frogmouths rarely move, mimicking a dead branch in their chosen tree. However, this female was awake, staring with her huge yellow eyes and gaping, exposing the yellow lining of her mouth.
