A red tide continues to pose a challenge to residents and visitors to many Southwest Florida beaches, footage filmed on February 13 shows.

The bloom of toxic algae appeared shortly after Hurricane Ian rolled over the region last fall, and it has moved up and down the coast between Naples and Tampa for months, leaving beaches littered with dead fish and beachgoers who are sensitive to the toxins generated by the algae with irritated lungs and itchy eyes.

Red tide occurs naturally along the Gulf Coast but can be worsened by manmade fertilizers and nutrient-rich waste that runs off from land to sea.

Hurricane Ian's heavy rains pumped a lot of pollutants into the Gulf Coast that experts say fed the bloom.

The filmer told Newsflare: "Many people enjoyed the sunset tonight on Manasota Beach in Englewood, Florida, as shown in this video, and they could be heard coughing from the effects of red tide."
